This problem with rising prices and shortages in the food chain is affecting everybody in one way or another, but whilst going through the online papers today, I see even places like ‘Greggs’ are facing some difficulties keeping their shops stocked with their usual array of mouth-watering goodies. One of the things people seem to be missing more than anything else in the ‘Chees & Onion Pasty’ , which, by the way is one of Greggs best selling snacks.
Well, fear not, I think I’ve perfected a copycat recipe which is as near to the original as possible. Give them a try and tell me what you think.

Pretty close, but missing a few ingredients speaking as someone who worked for Gregg’s. Good job however. I miss my Sharon cutter.
Hi Alison. Thanks for the feedback, always nice to hear. Also thanks for the 5 star rating too,
Made these yesterday – they were fab. I halved the recipe though probably used a little more potato and onion than stated but they tasted divine. I only had one pack of ready rolled pastry sheets which made 3 so I had half the quantity of the cheese and potato mix left so I had to go and buy another pack and we’ve had them again today. Naughty but nice! Adding these to my repertoire for sure. Hubby wants me to make a Greggs copycat corned beef pasty which I’m going to make in exactly the same way but just swap the cheese for corned beef.
Thank you Mr Paul 😋
Hi Barbara, most certainly they will freeze, in fact every one of Greggs Cheese & Onion bakes are supplied to the shops frozen.
Hi Paul. Will these freeze before baking?
Hi Toni, Thanks for the feedback it’s very much appreciated I do have Greggs Steak Bake on my to-do-list.
Hello, I haven’t had Gregg’s in 10 years because I moved to Australia . I have craved cheese and onion pasties for years 🙁 this recipe is beautiful! I couldn’t really tell the difference . I made a huge batch and shared them with my parents, my Aussie partner and colleagues! Everyone loved them. Thank you so much 🙂 ( please make more Gregg’s copycat recipes haha) thanks again
It’s a commercial tool called a ‘Sharon Cutter’
I’ve never made them without eggs sorry.
Ps, I have made similar pasties using what you used but I didn’t think to add eggs. What are your thoughts on this?
I have never seen that cutting gadget. What is it called and where could I buy one?
Sorry for my absence on here but I’m recovering from a nasty fall in my kitchen, injuring my neck and head. Hope to be back ASAP
Regards Mr. Paul
My pasties were lovely, thank you! My boys did comment that they could have been just a little bit dry, Gregg’s were more ‘gooey’ for want if a better word!! Any tips please?
Hi Susan, have you tried making my Greggs CopyCat Pasties?
Delicious. I always go to Greggs for cheese & onion pasties when I’m in the UK. I’ve lived in Canada for 34 yrs & still miss some of the UK food.
I will 🙂
Hi Mishy,
Yes, weigh the mashed potato, but when you mash them DO NOT add any milk or cream. just a little butter if you like. Please let me now how you get on with the recipe, thanks.

Hi Aron, Many thanks for the feedback, it’s always nice hear. I hope the Cornish pasties turn out OK and you both have a good time on the 4th.
Thank you for the recipe!!! I live in California and miss my childhood recipes!
I took my wife for her first pasties and meat pies on our honeymoon three years ago.
These are amazing and fun to make with her!
Tomorrow we make Cornish pasties to take to a 4th of July party!

Hi Pam,
You can make them any size you wish, in the video mine were roughly 5 inches square (12.5 cm) finished. Hope that helps
