Mince & Tatties (Minced Beef & Mashed Potato)
Mince & Tatties (Minced Beef & Mashed Potato) is a traditional Scottish dish and enjoyed by Scots around the world when it no doubt brings back happy memories of their childhood.
Although a very simple dish there is nothing simple about the taste and the comfort it brings with it. It’s generally thought of as a winter dish, but I can assure you, it’s just as enjoyable at any time of the year.
You can make this recipe as simple or as complicated as you wish, some people add lots of herbs and spices together with a host of other vegetables. My recipe is the standard traditional family recipe with just the necessary ingredients.

DISCLAIMER
I recommend using the Metric measurements (instead of cups & spoons) for more accuracy and better results.
Instructions
- Add about a tablespoon of oil to your pan and gently fry the chopped onions for around 5 minutes until starting to soften.
- Next add the chopped carrots and continue cooking for 10 more minutes
- Next to go in is the minced beef, stir well to break up any clumps and gently cook on a medium heat until the mince no longer looks pink.
- Season with salt and pepper and then add in your stock. you can if you wish, add 1/2 teaspoon of marmite or Bovril at this stage, but this is optional
- If you are going to add any herbs, etc. such as thyme, bay leaves, etc, now is the time to add them
- Continue cooking for a further 15 minutes, until the mince is properly cooked.
- In the meantime you can be making your mashed potatoes and if using it your mashed Swede too.
- Check how your gravy is in the pan, if you like it a little thicker, then make a slurry with your cornflour by adding a tablespoon of cold water and add how ever much you like until the sauce is to your liking.
- Serve with your Mashed Potato and Swede
