Apple & Blackberry Crumble
This Apple & Blackberry Crumble really is one of my favourites, especially on a cold winter evening with lashings of homemade creamy custard to help it along. However, it can be made anytime of the year, as I usually use frozen fruits which are excellent for this type of dish.

Ingredients
- Crumble mix
- 200 g Plain flour
- 125 g Butter
- 125 g sugar Demerara or white granulated
- 50 g Oats Porridge Oats but NOT instant type
- ½ tsp Ground Cinnamon
- ½ tsp Ground Nutmeg
- Filling
- 1 kg Apples whichever variety you prefer, I like to use a mixture of Granny Smith and Pink Lady.
- 150 g Blackberries I use frozen ones
- Zest and juice of 1 decent sized Lemon
- 50 g Butter
- 50 g sugar Granulated
- 1 tsp Ground Cinnamon
DISCLAIMER
I recommend using the Metric measurements (instead of cups & spoons) for more accuracy and better results.
Instructions
- The first thing you need to do is finely grate the zest and juice your lemon.
- Next prepare your apples by washing. peeling and coring them, then dice into smallish pieces. Try to get them all the same size so they all cook at the same time. Set these aside for the time being.
- Making the crumble mix,
- Put the Flour, sugar, oats and butter into you mixing bowl and gently squeeze the mixture together rather than rubbing as you would pastry. This will give you a much courser look than the usual fine bread crumbs.
- Now you can add your cinnamon and nutmeg. Leave this to one side until needed.
- Preheat your oven to 160°C fan / 180°C non fan/ gas mark 4.
- Making the Filling
- Take 50g of sugar from the filling list above and add it to a large frying pan you have preheated. The sugar will start to melt, when it starts to turn a golden colour add your apples.
- Cook and stir for a couple of minutes, then add the lemon zest and Cinnamon and gently mix together, finally add the butter, stir and cook for 3 minutes.
- Transfer the cooked hot apples to whatever dish or tin you’re using, I use either a Pirex dish or a small enamel roasting tin. Now spread out the blackberries evenly across the apples and completely and evenly cover the fruit with the crumble mix.
- Place in the hot oven and cook for 30 minutes.
- Once ready allow it to stand for a few minutes and serve hot with custard or vanilla ice cream.
- Enjoy.

Hello and thank you Rostik for your very nice comment. Also for the 5 star rating too.
A wonderful recipe! I made the crumble as a Christmas Day desert and have been begged to make it again on two occasions since then. Mr Paul’s Pantry is my “go to website” whenever I’m searching for a traditional English dish to cook for my friends here in Russia. Mr Paul never ever let’s me down!
