Irish Soda Farls
Irish Soda Farls are a traditional Soda Bread mainly favoured in the North of Ireland and are cooked on a griddle plate or a heavy bottomed frying pan on top of the stove as apposed to other soda bread which is baked in the oven. They can be enjoyed simply buttered or with a little jam, however, many people, including myself have them with a Sunday morning fried breakfast.

I find that’s a problem with a lot of T.V. Chefs, they try to make things complicated to make you think how clever they are. All the best recipes are from our parents and grad parents, just plain simple ingredients and no messing about. Can I ask you to try my Traditional English Muffins, you’ll find it at this link; https://youtu.be/v4GKCCFtCCQ
By the way Sharon, I run a very busy bakery and the reason most commercial baked things like Soda Farls taste different, it’s the additives to keep them fresh on the shop shelves. Love from Spain xx
This is a really good recipe for authentic-tasting soda farls (not a variation on how some chefs think they should taste).
I grew up in Northern Ireland and these were a staple of the Ulster Fry but even just over the sea in England I struggled to find these in the shops and bakeries.
The buttermilk substitute works a treat too.
I love them if I have any left the next day, split, toasted and then a load of strong cheddar cheese melted on them with a sprinkle of black pepper on top.
