Classic English Onion Gravy
Classic Onion Gravy
Over the years I’ve seen many different recipes for making onion gravy, also more recently viewed many videos on YouTube of Celebrity Chefs making what they termed Onion Gravy. Traditional English Onion Gravy is a very simple thing to make, why people try to complicate it is beyond me. I suspect, a few of the well known Chefs don’t like you to think things are simple, so they add this, that and the other to make it sound like only Chefs can do it.

Hi from Guatemala. I whipped up a pot of your gravy recipe, but as I didn’t have beef stock on hand I used chicken stock powder. The taste was still good, just the color was a bit yellow. Until recently you couldn’t usually get gravy powder here, and so gravy was actually a strange exotic sauce.
Hello Joan, nice to hear from you again. I personally usually make my own stocks and freeze them in portions, however, if you can buy BOVRIL as we can here in the Spanish supermarkets you can up the with that and boiling water. In case you fancy making up a batch of Beef Stock this is a recipe from my private notes (not on website), I hope this helps.

Hi Paul,
I have written to you once before and I know from your comments that you live in Spain; I’m in Portugal (next door neighbours). I have never been able to find beef stock cubes here without paying a fortune for them so I’m wondering if you are able to buy them in Spain? Everything as you are probably aware has become impossible since Brexit in Terms of bring Oxo cubes etc back from the UK. I guess my question is how would you substitute them to make this gravy? Knorr don’t sell a beef stock cube here either. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Hi John,
Thank you for watching my video and for taking the time to comment. The beef stock I used in the video was actually a made-up beef stock cube (Caldo), most times I make my own so usually have some in the freezer. As I use a private butcher I always have access to the bones needed for that. Most supermarkets sell ready made stock in cartons thesee days, however, beef stock is not always available as the Spanish aren’t big beef consumers I’m afraid.
Dear Mr. Paul I’ve just discovered your page and am in awe of your practical and real knowledge in all things cooking, as well as the calm and professional manner in which you teach your followers. I would like to ask you where I could buy the ready made beefstock that you use for your onion gravy in Spain?. Thanks and keep up the good work! Un saludo! John.
