McDonalds Copycat Apple Pies – Baked, NOT Fried
The Master Pie Maker
The recipe for McDonald’s apple pie originally came from a Knoxville, Tennessee, franchisee named Litton Cochran, who had opened that city’s first McDonald’s in 1960. The apple pie was the first dessert added to the McDonald’s menu in 1968, the same year that the fast-food company introduced the Big Mac. The original recipe and turnover-style pie was fried to crispiness with a light golden colour and served hot in a folded cardboard carton. While this copycat recipe can be fried just like the original, but you can enjoy this iconic hand held Apple Pie by baking it instead of frying it.

Ingredients
- 4 Medium sized apples peeled and chopped
- 100 g Brown sugar
- 30 g Butter
- 1 Teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 2 Teaspoons cornflour
- 1 Sheet of thawed or fresh puff pastry
- 1 Teaspoon warm water
DISCLAIMER
I recommend using the Metric measurements (instead of cups & spoons) for more accuracy and better results.
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 200ºc. Line a baking sheet sheet with parchment paper.
- Over medium heat, combine apples, butter, brown sugar, cinnamon in a saucepan until it comes to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for about 5 minutes until the apples are cooked but not mushy.
- Then mix the cornflour with a little cold water until smooth, add to the apples and cook gently until thickened.
- Roll out thawed puff pastry on a floured surface and cut into 4 squares. Brush each piece of puff pastry with egg wash and spoon the apple mixture into the centre of each puff pastry square. Fold each square so that the edges line up and using the prongs of a fork press them together to seal (See photo). Transfer to the baking sheet sheet and brush with the egg wash for a final time and sprinkle granulated sugar over the top. Make four slices in the top of each of the pastries (see photo)
- Bake for 25 - 30 minutes, or until the turnovers are golden brown.

Hello Cathy, thanks for you comment, unfortunately in the bakery we always made them fresh each day and when they were gone that was it until the next day. So I have never tried making them ahead of time. Although, I do know they are delivered to McDonalds frozen raw, then fried from frozen. I hope this helps in some small way.
can the mcdonalds apple turnovers be prepared ahead of baking time and stored until baking time if so how long before can i prepare and how do I store
Hi Sue, I have another one in the pipeline coming soon.
Thank you!
