Date Crumble Slice

This Date Crumble Slice is something I learnt to cook in Morocco where my late wife Pam and I had a house for quite a few years, we didn’t live there, just used it for holidays. But over the years we made some very good friends, especially our neighbours Allat (اللات) her husband Aslam (اسلم) and their two beautiful children. Allat taught me to cook many Moroccan dishes, but this one in particular is a favourite of mine for a teatime treat. It’s a very simple recipe but if you like dates it’s a real winner. especially with Children.

Ingredients

  • 150 g dates stoned
  • 125 ml cold water
  • 150 g plain flour
  • 100 g rolled oats
  • 100 g sugar light brown
  • 125 g unsalted butter softened

DISCLAIMER

I recommend using the Metric measurements (instead of cups & spoons) for more accuracy and better results.

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 200⁰C/Fan 180⁰C/Gas Mark 6 then lightly grease and line the base?of a 20cm square brownie tin.
  • Break the block of dates up into pieces then place into a pan with the water. Cook over a low heat for 3-5 minutes until softened.
  • In a bowl, mix the flour, oats and sugar together and then rub in the butter to make a crumbly texture. Spoon half the mix over the base of the tin then press down firmly.
  • Spread the softened dates out evenly over the top of the pressed base, then top with the remaining oat mix pressing down lightly whilst retaining a crumbly top.
  • Bake in the centre of your preheated oven for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
  • Leave in the tin until completely cooled then cut into 12 slices, serve and enjoy!
Paul's Tips
If you have a sweet tooth you can spread a thin layer of strawberry jam on the base before adding the dates.

I added a teaspoonful of cinnamon to the dry mixture, it’s a winner!

Thanks for the recipe, I made this today.
I like how you can use the mixture in 2 different ways on one baking.
150g dates (used a masher after cooking them) was a bit too little to cover the whole base, I did the rest with some apricot jam.
